Questions about this calculator
How do I calculate hours worked?
Subtract the start time from the finish time, then take off any unpaid break. For example 08:00 to 16:30 with a 30-minute break is 8 hours exactly. This calculator does that for you and also shows the result in decimal hours.
What are decimal hours and why does payroll want them?
Decimal hours express minutes as a fraction of an hour, so 8 hours 30 minutes becomes 8.50. Most payroll systems multiply decimal hours by the hourly rate, so entering 8.30 instead of 8.50 underpays the shift.
Does it handle night shifts that pass midnight?
Yes. If the finish time is earlier than the start time, the shift is treated as running overnight — for example 22:00 to 06:00 is counted as 8 hours.
Should breaks be deducted?
Deduct breaks that are unpaid and during which the employee is free to leave their post. Paid breaks stay in the total. Check your own contracts and local rules, as break rights and pay differ by country.
